Tutoring

One child. One guide. One carefully chosen piece of work.

Tutoring at Omega begins with observation. Before a guide sits down with a child, she watches—noting what the child chooses, where she hesitates, what lights her up. The session that follows is not a generic lesson plan. It is a precise response to what that particular child needs right now.

How It Works

Observation first, then guided practice, then independent work.

01
Observation

The guide observes the child during a regular work cycle or reviews notes from the classroom guide. She identifies the specific skill or concept where the child is stuck, confused, or ready for the next step.

02
Session Planning

Each tutoring session is planned around a single, clear objective. The guide selects materials and prepares a presentation that meets the child exactly where she is—not where the curriculum says she should be.

03
Guided Practice

In the session itself, the guide presents the work, watches the child attempt it, and offers minimal, precise correction. The goal is competence, not dependence. The child should be able to continue the work independently afterward.

04
Follow-Up

The guide communicates with the classroom team so that the child’s daily environment supports what was practiced. Progress is observed over subsequent days, not tested with a quiz.

Who Benefits

Tutoring is not remediation. It is precision.

Some children come to tutoring because they are struggling with a specific concept—long division with remainders, or the transition from phonetic to sight-word reading. Others come because they are ready to move faster than the typical sequence allows. A child who has mastered the checkerboard for multiplication might be ready for squaring, and a one-on-one session is the most efficient way to make that presentation.

In either case, the approach is the same: observe, identify the precise point of need, present clearly, and step back.

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’”

Subject Areas

One-on-one sessions are available across all curriculum areas.

Mathematics

From early number work through algebra and geometry. Guides use hands-on materials to make abstract concepts concrete, then help the child bridge to symbolic notation.

Language & Literacy

Phonetic decoding, reading comprehension, grammar, writing mechanics, and composition. Sessions meet the child at her current reading level and build from there.

Sciences

Botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Tutoring in science often means helping a child design a sound experiment or organize her research findings.

History & Geography

Timeline work, map skills, and research methodology. Guides help children develop the skills to pursue independent historical investigations.

Foreign Language

Conversational practice, vocabulary building, and reading in Spanish, French, or Mandarin. Sessions are conducted primarily in the target language.

Executive Function

Planning, time management, organization, and study strategies. Especially useful for adolescents managing complex research projects and multiple responsibilities.

Practical Details

What families should know before enrolling.

01

Sessions are 30 or 45 minutes, depending on the child’s age and the nature of the work.

02

Tutoring is available to current Omega students and to children from other schools. All tutors are trained in observation-based, child-centered teaching methods.

03

Families receive a brief written summary after each session describing what was presented and what the child can practice at home.

04

Sessions are scheduled weekly at a consistent time. Consistency matters more than frequency—one focused session per week is often enough.

How to begin

Start with a conversation. A brief intake call with our tutoring coordinator will help us understand your child’s needs and match her with the right guide. For current students, we also consult with the classroom team to ensure continuity.

Get Started

The right support, at the right moment, makes all the difference.

Whether your child needs help with a specific skill or is ready to move ahead, our guides can meet her where she is. Begin with a brief intake conversation.
